Air Products Appoints New Business Development Manager Hydrogen for Mobility UKI

Shahid Sheikh moves into a new role at Air Products to expand the Hydrogen for Mobility team

Air Products (NYSE: APD), a world leading industrial gas company, has expanded its Hydrogen for Mobility team in the United Kingdom and Ireland (UKI) by appointing Shahid Sheikh as its new Business Development Manager.

Strengthening the team, Shahid will be responsible for driving growth for the Hydrogen for Mobility business in the UKI, which is focused on supporting wholescale energy transition across the country. He will be working closely with national and local government and industry experts to support the Government’s drive towards a low-carbon hydrogen future, and help more organisations to achieve their sustainability targets by using green hydrogen.

Sheikh originally joined Air Products in January 2019 and has a wealth of commercial experience working within the energy industry focused on energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint. This latest appointment will see him leave his role as Liquid Bulk Business Development Manager in the East Region, to focus on hydrogen at a national level.

Sheikh said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Hydrogen for Mobility team at Air Products. It’s a particularly interesting time for the transport industry as the use of hydrogen becomes more popular, helping eliminate or significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We have seen recently, with the launch of the UK governments first-ever Hydrogen Strategy, just how critical the use of hydrogen is to achieving the country’s net zero goal. As we work towards a cleaner future for everyone, I feel proud to be playing my part in achieving that.”

As the world’s largest hydrogen producer, Air Products has experience across the full value chain for hydrogen and is driving sustainable growth by building, owning and operating the world’s largest production, gasification, carbon capture, transportation and fueling projects. With over 60 years of global hydrogen experience operating in over 50 countries, Air Products has the proven capability and know-how to make hydrogen through all available production methods and to distribute this increasingly important emission-free fuel safely, reliably, and economically.

The team has been working in the UK hydrogen sector for many years, including developing its flagship hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) at London Heathrow. The HRS first became operational ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, serving London’s first hydrogen-fuelled black cab taxis, which transported VIPs around the Olympic venues. Since then, the HRS was one of the first commercial hydrogen fuelling stations in the UK and supported an early commercial fleet of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. More recently, it’s been regularly used by couriers, taxis, police vehicles and buses, as well as the first hydrogen truck in the U.K.

Commenting on Sheikh’s appointment, Manish Patel, New Business Development On-Sites and Hydrogen for Mobility at Air Products, said: “I am pleased to welcome Shahid into a new role within the Hydrogen for Mobility team, which is an important step in growing our business and driving future growth in the UK and Ireland.  He’s a fantastic addition to our team, bringing with him an excellent understanding of the industry and great experience working in the industrial gases sector.  At Air Products, we’ve been involved in more than 10 million hydrogen vehicle fills across the world, so I‘m excited to be working with Shahid to build upon the key work we’re doing in the hydrogen sector.”
