Basic Oxygen Furnace

Argon

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is routinely used to 'splash' slag from the bottom of the furnace to the side-walls to help extend refractory life. For bottom stirring, nitrogen can be used during initial stirring cycles to reduce argon consumption while providing stirring benefits and keeping the tuyeres open.

Oxygen

Oxygen is injected at high rates and pressures to refine and decarburise hot metal. Oxygen can be supplied from a dedicated plant located at or near your facility. Or, we can supplement your existing supply with a bulk supply of liquid oxygen delivered by truck. We can help you optimise oxygen usage for your basic oxygen furnace operation and can provide you with the most economical mode of supply based on your consumption patterns.

Bottom Stirring Technology

By injecting gases through the bottom of the vessel, mixing is greatly enhanced which enables reduced heat times and increased metal yields. Net savings on the order of $1 per ton of hot metal are well documented.

Oxygen plants - Cryogenic

A cryogenic air separation plant is used to supply oxygen for iron/steel and non-ferrous metal production. Air Products works closely with the customer to integrate the air separation plant with the metal producers’ process to provide the most energy efficient and cost effective design.
