Oxygen Enrichment

In petroleum refineries, oxygen is often used to debottleneck Claus Sulphur Recovery Units (SRU). Air Products pioneered this technology in the mid 80s and offers several oxygen enrichment technologies for this application. Also, oxygen is often used to increase the capacity and conversion of a Fluid Catalytic Cracker (FCC) in a refinery. This is done by oxygen-enriching the combustion air to the regenerator and offers a very quick and economical means of boosting refinery profits.

The trend towards heavier and sourer crudes as well as ever-tightening product sulphur specifications continues to stretch the sulphur processing capabilities. Oxygen enrichment is employed to boost capacity of sulphur recovery units, and in some instances to reduce SO2 emissions to achieve environmental conformance. Oxygen can be supplied from a dedicated plant located at or near a customer's facility, owned, operated and managed by Air Products, or from a plant owned by the customer. Air Products has produced over 1200 air separation plants and currently owns and operates over 300 air separation plants.
