Combustion of Glycerol By-product

As more oils and fats are converted to biodiesel, storage and disposal costs for the raw glycerol by-product are increasing. In addition, although pure glycerol has many uses, the purification step may be costly, thereby negatively impacting the overall economics of biodiesel production. One potential solution is the use of raw glycerol as an alternative fuel in boiler and furnace retrofits to produce heat and power. Although promising, there are challenges due to the following properties of glycerol:

  • Can lead to incomplete, inefficient combustion
  • Can produce toxic acrolein (0.1 ppm TWA) after incomplete combustion

Air Products' researchers have determined that oxygen can help overcome these challenges.
