Getting started with NIV

  1. Start by placing your BiPAP machine securely next to your bed and plugging it in. If you have a humidifier attached to your BiPAP machine, ensure it is placed below the level of your head. When using a humidifier make sure that BiPAP machine is kept on a level surface at all times. Always ensure there is no water in the chamber before moving your BiPAP machine.
  2. Attach the tubing to the outlet on your BiPAP machine (or if using a humidifier the outlet on the humidifier). If using a humidifier you will need to make sure that it is connected properly to your BiPAP machine. The BiPAP machine can then be left until it is ready to be used.
  3. If using a humidifier, fill it with distilled water to the max fill level. You may want to pre-heat the water – always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  4. When you go to bed, first put your mask on and make sure it is the correct position – you may need to look in a mirror for the first few times until you are used to putting your mask on. Most masks will have quick release clips for you to use so you do not need to keep readjusting the headgear.
  5. Attach the tubing to your mask, get comfortable in your preferred sleeping position (you may find it easier laying on your back to start with).
  6. Turn your BiPAP machine on.

When using BiPAP for the first few times it may feel unusual with the feeling of pressure in the mask. Try to relax and breathe normally.
