Leaving the home with a cylinder
As well as the basic safety advice and general concentrator safety advice, when leaving their home with their cylinders, patients should be advised of the following:
- Make sure you have enough oxygen to last.
- Do not smoke and stay away from others who are smoking.
- Stay away from open flames, cigarettes or other sources of heat.
- For your comfort and safety, always use the specially-designed carry bag or a wheelchair bracket to carry your cylinder.
- Always carry Air Products' emergency number +353 (0)1 809 1800, LoCall 1850 240202 (ROI only) or Freephone 0800 328 5875 (Northern Ireland only)
- If going on holiday, you only need to take enough cylinders for your journeys to and from your destination.
- Your GP can arrange for oxygen to be supplied at your holiday location.
- If you are planning to use public transport, it is worth checking the operator’s safety policy before you leave.
There are specific guidelines for patients on transporting cylinders in a vehicle.
Do not smoke! Do not let anyone smoke near you!
Smoking will aggravate your condition and is dangerous when using oxygen.
