Responsible for the design, analysis, specification and troubleshooting of mechanical equipment for use by various operating groups. Typical equipment items are valves, piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and packaged process units. Other speciality items such as blend panels, burners, food freezers and gas cabinets are also within the scope of design engineers.
Involved with the design, application, selection and long-term operation of compressors, turbines, pumps and expanded systems, including auxiliaries such as lubrication and seal systems, heat exchangers, piping and instrumentation and control systems.
Provide a variety of support services to our production facilities. Preventive and predictive maintenance programmes, troubleshooting, work order systems, planning and scheduling, lubrication programmes and work sampling are among their responsibilities.
Manufacturing and Operations Engineers
Involved in all phases of manufacturing and plant operations. Assignments for chemical and mechanical engineers are found in Air Products' Maintenance, Process, Production, Project Engineering and Quality Assurance functions. Their assignments are either at our corporate headquarters or domestic plants.
Responsible for optimum process design and improvement of our facilities. This includes not only the development of a thermodynamically efficient process, but also the economic design of each piece of equipment. Process engineers apply engineering principles to the design, development and operation of chemical and gas separation plants across a wide range of businesses-speciality chemicals, cryogenic air separation, high-temperature process for the production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, electronic speciality gases (ESG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrocarbon separation processes.
Process Control Engineers: Ensure that the production plants we build can be monitored and controlled to optimum efficiency. Depending on its size and complexity, a plant may employ a simple PLC (programmable logic controller) or more sophisticated DCS (distributed control system), each of which must be configured to perform appropriate control and monitor display functions. Advanced control applications such as MPC (model predictive control) also fall within their realm of responsibility.
Process Systems Engineers
Responsible for developing P&IDs (process and instrumentation diagrams) that provide the definitive scope of equipment, valves, flowmeters, safety devices, etc., for a new facility. They also ensure that all start-up, shutdown and other operational and maintenance requirements are included in the facility's design.
Product Development Engineers
Responsible for the technical, economic and business aspects of new market development from conception through commercialisation and, ultimately, to customer acceptance. They become involved in equipment design and testing, process development, economic and market studies and sales and profit forecasts.
Responsible for monitoring the production process to ensure sound operation and the efficient use of raw materials and energy. Their work typically includes resolving technical operating problems to minimise production costs and to improve on-stream time.
Manage and coordinate the efforts of our various engineering groups and other departments in the design and construction of a facility. As a project engineer, you must be both a capable engineer and administrator, using critical path methods and computer cost control as tools in taking the facility or equipment from the contract signing to start-up.
Project Development Engineers
Responsible for capital cost estimates and profitability analyses for major capital expenditures. They are involved throughout the project cycle, coordinating all engineering input for the initial bid to the customer, preparing a detailed project budget and managing final execution of the project's cost.
Research and Development Engineers
Support a broad spectrum of research activities from long-range fundamental programmes to more market-driven applied R&D efforts. Significant resources of the company are committed to numerous areas, including cryogenic and noncryogenic gas separation technologies, wastewater treatment, liquid natural gas processing, polymers, industrial and speciality chemicals and environmental controls.
Ensure that we are applying the highest degree of technology to maximise safety in the laboratory and field environments. Responsibilities include leading HazOp reviews for specific projects, developing fault trees for safety-relief scenarios and analysing incidents for root cause failures.
Responsible for the start-up and commissioning of all new production facilities. They inspect all equipment, perform operational readiness inspections, commission equipment and conduct performance testing of the entire facility.
